No less than eight members of the Names Society presented papers at the 24th Triennial Congress of ICOS, held in Barcelona in the first week of September 2011. These were Enoch Mabuza from UNISA, Linda van Huyssteen from the Tshwane Institute of technology, Bertie Neethling from the University of the Western Cape, and five delegates all from the School of isiZulu Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal: Adrian Koopman and Boni Zungu from the Pietermaritzburg campus, and Nakanjani Sibiya, Gugu Mazibuko, and Nobuhle Hlongwa. Professor Neethling stayed on in Europe after the ICOS congress and was able to attend an onomastic conference at the University of Baia Mare in Romania at the end of September.

During the last week of September 2011 NSA founder member Dr Peter E Raper gave an inaugural address at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein to mark his recent appointment as a Professor Extraordinary at that university.  Among the “old stalwarts” of the NSA attending this occasion were Lucie Möller, Babs Meiring, Johan Lubbe and Adrian Koopman. On the next day, NSA member Professor Theo Du Plessis and colleagues from the UFS organized a full-day colloquium on topical naming issues in South Africa today, and Raper, Möller and Koopman were among the small group who presented papers at this colloquium. It is worth noting that Dr Lucie Möller has also been appointed a Research Fellow at the University of the Free State, excellent news for onomastics in South Africa as it means that these two dedicated scholars of names – Raper and Möller – will continue to receive recognition and financial support for their contributions to onomastic research in South Africa.
